 OUR HISTORY

We want to say thank you to Bro. Lewis Sandlin who retired this past July as the Pastor of Mt. Calvary Pentecostal Church. He was pastor for almost 30 years.

Our Church building was orginally built in Kenneys Bend around the year 1874 and was the home of Mt. Olivet Methodist Church. It was later dismantled and moved with wagons and mules to this present location. According to Smith County History, Mt. Olivet Methodist Church was the oldest church in the Rome Rock City area.
In June of 1994, the church was closed by the Methodist Conference due to declining membership and later became for sale.
Before this property was put up for sale and long before we knew there would be a Mt. Calvary Pentecostal Church we felt the spirit drawing us toward this building. This was something we did not understand, but we realize that God knows the future. Mt. Calvary Pentecostal Church was organized on September 11, 1994. Soon afterward we learned that the Mt. Olivet property was for sale and we purchased this building and lot on February 23, 1995.
We began restoration and building process and God blessed us abundantly. Many people began to donate money, donate materials, give us discounts on merchandise, lend us machinery, buy from our fundraisers and donate time and labor. We know God already has or will greatly reward all those people for their kindness.
First and formost, we could not have done this without the help of God and his blessings over our heads. Second, it would not have been possible without the love and cooperation among the members of Mt. Calvary Pentecostal Church.
We worked, we played, we cried, we laughed, we prayed, and we joked, but through it all we kept a vision.
This building had been built for the glory of God and our prayer is that many souls will find their way to God at this place of worship.
Lift up your hands in the santuary and bless the Lord. Psalms 134:2

Yours in Christ,
Bro Lewis Sandlin
